What is a DC 12V relay?

DC 12V relay is an electromagnetic switch driven by 12V DC voltage. In addition, it is used for switching of high current devices while controlling small current signals and has a wide usage in automobiles, industrial control, power systems, and household appliances. The switch structure of the 12v relay using a gas sealed system greatly reduces the size of the relay switch area and the operational noise during load switching. Besides, this structure reduces power consumption in coils, and it offers long-term contact stability.

How Does DC 12V Relay Work

A DC 12V relay, just like any other relay, operates based on the principle of an electromagnet and switch contacts. Here's a simplified explanation of how a DC 12V relay works: 

 

Electromagnet

The general construction of any relay includes an electromagnet that is usually wound onto a ferromagnetic core. When an electric current passes through the coil, it creates a magnetic field around the core.

 

Coil and Contacts

Inside the relay, there exist two sets of contacts: normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC). The coil is normally connected to the energizing circuit, generally a DC power source of 12 volts.

 

Normally Open (NO) State
Application of a voltage of 12V to the coil passes current through the coil, which produces the magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts the movable armature or plunger towards the coil and closes the contacts.

 

Energizing the Coil
When a voltage of 12V is applied to the coil, the current flows through it, creating a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts the movable armature or plunger towards the coil, causing the contacts to change state.

 

Changing Contact State
When the coil is energized, the NO contacts shut and allow current to pass between their terminals. While doing so, the NC contacts open and shut-off any flow of current through them.

 

Maintaining Contact State
In other words, when the coil is energized and the contacts change state, the relay will remain in this state for as long as the coil is energized. In this way, the relay acts to supply current or not to various devices or circuits that are connected to its contacts.

 

De-energizing the Coil
When the voltage to the coil is removed, the magnetic field dissipates and the contacts return to their default positions. NO contacts reopen, and NC contacts close once more.
