The relay of the water heater is an important device for maintaining the temperature of the water flow. However, over time, these components may wear out. The performance may also deteriorate, leading to issues with hot water supply, unstable temperature, and other problems. Understanding how to test the relay of your water heater is crucial to ensure its proper functioning.

1. Turn off the power of the water heater

It is important to turn off the power before inspecting or repairing the water heater. Below I will explain the specific operation method: You can choose to turn off the circuit breaker or unplug the fuse to ensure that the power is completely cut off.

2. Find the relay for the water heater

The water heater relay is usually located inside the control panel of the water heater, near the electrical base. However, differences may arise due to variations in the brand and type of water heater. Next, open the cover of the control panel. We usually use a screw tool to remove the screws. After removing all the screws, you can open the cover to see the relay

3. Use a multimeter to test the relay

Firstly, regarding the measurement of relay switches:

Adjust the multimeter to resistance measurement mode to ensure accurate measurement.

Connect the test pen to the two terminals of the relay separately, ensuring good contact.

At this time, the relay is in a test state. Observing the display result of the multimeter, if it shows infinity, it indicates that the relay status is open circuit and there may be a problem; On the contrary, if a finite resistance value is displayed, it indicates that the relay is in a closed state and working properly.

Next is to test the excitation voltage of the relay:

Adjust the multimeter to voltage measurement mode to meet the measurement requirements of voltage.

Similarly, connect the test pen to both terminals of the relay to ensure stable contact.

At this point, it is necessary to plug in the power supply of the water heater and turn it on to provide working voltage for the relay.
Observing the display result of the multimeter, if the measured voltage value is consistent with the rated voltage of the relay, it indicates that the relay is working normally; On the contrary, if the measured voltage value does not match the rated voltage, it indicates that the relay may be damaged and needs to be replaced or repaired.

4.Replace the relay

When we detect a problem with the relay during testing, we need to replace it in a timely manner to ensure the normal use of the water heater. When purchasing a relay, please choose the QIANJI brand to provide you with safe and reliable relays.
