A relay is an electrical control device that can use small currents to control large current switches, playing a role in opening and closing circuits. Normally, relays have input and output terminals, and when there is a signal at the input terminal, the output terminal will generate a corresponding current. However, in the long run, it is inevitable that some problems will arise. It may be caused by environmental changes, manufacturing quality, etc. The following will elaborate on the manifestations of relay faults and corresponding repair methods
1.No current output:
When the relay inputs a high level but outputs no current, detecting its output terminal will reveal no current. The reason may be that when the coil or contact of the relay is damaged, it can cause the input to be high but the output to have no current Poor contact, aging insulation, and open circuit issues on the control circuit may also cause the relay to fail to respond. To address these issues, the following repair measures can be taken:
Check the coil: When there is a problem with the coil, a multimeter can be used to measure it. Contact the multimeter with the two sections of the coil to check for open circuit or poor contact. If there is a problem, you can choose to replace the relay
Cleaning the contacts: We have ruled out other possibilities and found that if the contacts have poor contact or welding that prevents the relay from working, we can use fine sandpaper to gently wipe the surface of the contacts to remove oxides and restore their normal working state.
2.Output abnormality:
There are three possible manifestations of relay output abnormality, including unstable output, excessive or insufficient current. These manifestations may be related to contact wear, looseness, or coil insulation damage. The repair method is as follows:
Replacing contacts: If we find that the contacts of the relay are severely worn or loose, we only need to replace them with a new contact. It is important to replace the contacts that match each other.
Check the insulation of the coil: Use an insulation resistance meter to measure the insulation resistance of the coil to ensure good insulation performance. If there is any damage, replace the relay.
3.Heating issue:
The working principle of a relay is to control the circuit's on/off by generating a magnetic field inside the coil through electricity. During this process, a small amount of energy is converted, and the relay consumes electrical energy to generate heat. Some relays may experience severe heating due to increased load, or overheating caused by high ambient temperature or poor coil insulation. The following measures can be taken for this:
Reduce load: Adjust appropriately to reduce the burden on relays, followed by selecting appropriate relays to meet actual load requirements and reduce heat generation.
Enhance heat dissipation: Increase ventilation equipment or change the position of relays to improve heat dissipation conditions.
Check the insulation of the coil: Once again, it is emphasized that the insulation condition of the coil has a direct impact on heating and needs to be checked and treated regularly.
